What is Menopause?

Menopause usually happens to most women in their late 40’s or early 50’s. The menopause is defined as having no menstrual cycle or period for more than 1 year. The average age for the onset of menopause is 51, however most women notice changes in the monthly cycles, and symptoms of menopause in the years leading up to menopause. This transition phase is often called perimenopause. The whole menopause transition usually lasts about 7 years but can last as long as 14 years in some cases.

The age women start the menopause transition is thought to be determined by genetics, but outside elements such as smoking or chemotherapy can accelerate the process, resulting in an earlier menopause.

What causes Menopause?

Menopause occurs from a natural decline in your reproductive hormones. As you age your ovaries start making less oestrogen and progesterone, the hormones that regulate your mensural cycle. As your fertility declines your menstrual periods become erratic, longer/ shorter/ heavier/ lighter than usual. It is different for every woman. Once you reach your late 40’s or early 50’s your ovaries stop releasing eggs, and once this happens your body has no more need for menstrual periods, so they stop.

Menopause can be brought on earlier by surgery that removes your ovaries (usually during a hysterectomy) or by cancer treatments such as Chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Roughly 1% of women will experience early menopause before the age of 40. These women are usually treated with hormone replacement therapies (HRT) to protect their heart and bones from the effects of hormone decline.

Symptoms of Menopause

All women experience menopause differently. There is no one size fits all with menopause. However, most women will experience some irregularity in their periods before they come to an end.

Hot Flushes are the most common symptom of menopause. Usually about 75% of women will experience hot flushes. Some women also experience muscle and joint pain, while others experience mood swings.

Below is a list of common symptoms that occur in the months or years leading up to menopause:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Chills
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Loss of libido
  • Mood changes
  • Changes to skin

How Menopause can affect you

While menopause is a natural process that all women go through it still has undesirable effects. Symptoms such as hot flushes and mood swings may disrupt your sleep, drain your energy, or affect your emotional health and wellbeing.

The decline in hormone levels, especially oestrogen, can reduce the amount of calcium in your bones. This can lead to a condition called osteoporosis, which if untreated can cause your bones to break easily or lead to arthritis and pain.

The decline in oestrogen can also affect your heart. Low levels of oestrogen can lead to heart disease. This happens because oestrogen keeps your blood vessels flexible, when it declines, they become stiff, and the blood flow is reduced.

Changes in hormone levels have been shown to increase weight and slow down your metabolism. This means that it becomes harder to lose weight and you need less calories in your diet for day-to-day activities.
